The conservative treatment of congenital scoliosis with hemivertebra: report of three cases
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background Scoliosis is the most common congenital disorder. The vertebral disorder can be due to failure of formation, segmentation or their combination. Complete formation failure results in hemivertebra that can cause asymmetrical growth and deformity. The etiopathogenesis of congenital scoliosis is still unclear. Twenty-five percent of congenital curves do not progress, 25% undergoes mild progression, while the remaining 50% evolve rapidly and require treatment. Hemivertebra, in the thoraco-lumbar area, display faster rates of progression than those in the lumbar region. The treatment can be either conservative, or surgical. Usually, in rigid and short curves bracing is not recommended, whereas it can be useful for the treatment of secondary curves.

RATIONALE Congenital scoliosis due to a hemivertebra creates a wedge-shaped deformity, which progresses and causes severe spinal deformities as an individual grows. The treatment of congenital scoliosis focuses on early diagnosis and appropriate surgical management before the development of severe deformity. PATIENT CONCERNS We report the case of a 4-year-old male child with a left thoracolum...

Hemivertebrae are a common cause of congenital scoliosis. Depending on their location and the magnitude of the resultant deformity, they may be asymptomatic or require treatment. In the past, treatment has focused on prevention of deformity progression in growing children. Little has been written about congenital scoliosis presenting in adulthood. Because the aging of the spine is a kyphosing p...
متن کاملSurgical outcomes and complications of posterior hemivertebra resection in children younger than 5 years old
BACKGROUND There have been many reports on posterior hemivertebra resection. However, there were few articles in very young cases. This is a clinical retrospective study to evaluate the complications and efficacy of posterior hemivertebra resection in very young cases. METHODS From January 2003 to January 2012, 39 consecutive cases of congenital scoliosis with hemivertebra were retrospectivel...
متن کاملRevision surgery for lumbar hemivertebra in a 7-year-old child with 10-year follow-up—a case report
RATIONALE Hemivertebrae, which are the most frequent cause of congenital scoliosis, pose a challenge in terms of prognosis and therapy. The current gold standard treatment congenital scoliosis due to a lumbar and thoracic hemivertebra would be hemivertebra resection and short level posterior spinal fusion. Paucity literatures are reported for the treatment of hemivertebra by convex fusion with ...

BACKGROUND Posterior hemivertebra resection has become a safe and effective procedure for congenital scoliosis due to hemivertebra. However, there are still complications following primary posterior hemivertebra resection in recent reports. No risk factors associated with construct/implant related complications were identified so far. The purpose of this study is to analyze complications follow...
